UTV cover buying guide

Key takeaways

  • Storage, outdoor and trailerable covers are built for different jobs; do not trailer with a storage cover.
  • Higher denier fabric is tougher and heavier; around 600D suits trailering.
  • Vents prevent trapped moisture and mildew on outdoor covers.
  • Measure with your roof, mirrors and racks installed, and count the seats.
  • Model-specific covers fit snugger and flap less in wind.

A good cover is one of the cheapest ways to protect a side-by-side. Sun fades plastics and seats, rain finds every gap, and dust and bird droppings eat at finishes. But covers are not all the same: a cover built for a dusty garage will shred at highway speed on a trailer, and a heavy trailer cover can trap moisture in storage.

This guide explains the types of UTV covers, what to look for in materials and fit, and how to choose the right one for how you use your machine.

The three types of UTV covers

Cover type Best for Look for
Storage cover Garage, barn or carport storage Breathable fabric, elastic hem, light weight
Outdoor storage cover Parking outside for weeks or months Waterproof coating, UV resistance, vents, tie-downs
Trailerable cover Towing on an open trailer at highway speed Heavy denier fabric, reinforced seams, cinch straps, a snug fit

Materials explained

You will see covers listed by denier (D), a measure of fiber thickness. Higher denier generally means a heavier, tougher fabric.

  • Around 210D: lighter, easier to handle, good for storage and occasional outdoor use.
  • Around 300D to 420D: a solid middle ground for outdoor storage.
  • Around 600D and up: built for trailering and harsh weather, heavier to handle.

Coatings matter as much as fabric weight. A waterproof backing keeps rain out, a UV treatment slows fading, and a soft inner lining helps protect windshields and painted panels.

Ventilation mattersA fully sealed cover can trap moisture and lead to mildew. Look for built-in vents, especially if your machine will sit outside for long periods.

Universal or model-specific fit?

Universal covers come in size ranges based on length, width and height. Model-specific covers are cut for a particular machine, so they fit around roofs, mirrors and racks better and flap less in the wind.

  • Measure your machine with accessories installed: roof, light bars, mirrors, racks and whips change the size you need.
  • Count the seats. Two-seat and four-seat versions of the same model need different covers.
  • For trailering, model-specific or a very snug fit is strongly recommended. Loose fabric flapping at speed wears through quickly and can scuff paint.

Features worth paying for

  • Tie-down straps and buckles under the machine to stop the cover lifting in wind.
  • Reinforced or double-stitched seams for trailer use.
  • Zippered access to the cab or fuel area on some covers.
  • Reflective strips for visibility when parked or trailered.
  • A storage bag so the cover rides along with the machine.

Trailering tips

  1. Strap the machine down first, then fit the cover.
  2. Tighten every cinch strap and tuck loose fabric.
  3. Stop after the first few miles to check for flapping and re-tighten.
  4. Remove whips and flags, and fold mirrors if possible, before covering.

Storage tips

  1. Wash and dry the machine before covering so dirt does not abrade the finish.
  2. Let a hot engine and exhaust cool down first.
  3. Use vents, and lift the cover occasionally to let moisture escape.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trailer my UTV with a storage cover?

It is not recommended. Storage covers usually are not strong enough for highway wind and can tear or flap against the paint. Use a cover rated as trailerable.

What size UTV cover do I need?

Measure the length, width and height of your machine with accessories installed, and check the cover's size chart or buy a model-specific cover for your make, model and seat count.

Are waterproof UTV covers breathable?

Some are, and many include vents. A cover that is fully waterproof with no ventilation can trap moisture, so look for vents if you store outside.

Do I need a cover if my UTV has a roof?

A roof keeps rain off the seats but does not protect the dash, plastics and body from sun, dust and debris. A cover protects the whole machine.

The bottom line

Choose a breathable storage cover for indoor use, a vented waterproof cover for outdoor parking and a heavy-duty, snug-fitting cover for trailering. Measure with your accessories installed and pick model-specific when you can. Browse UTV covers, or shop by machine from our Ride Hub.
