Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 and KRX4 Upgrades: What to Add First

The Teryx KRX 1000 is built for rough ground. It sits wide, it has long suspension travel, and it's heavy in a way that makes it feel planted on rocks and ledges. Most owners don't buy one to go fast on groomed trails. They buy it to crawl, climb, and get to places that beat up lighter machines. That should shape what you add to it.

Check fit before you order anything

A few details decide whether a part bolts on or goes back in the box.

  • Two-seat or four-seat. The KRX4 has a longer cage, so roofs, rear windows, doors, and anything that spans the cage are specific to it. A KRX roof won't cover a KRX4.
  • Model year. Kawasaki has made running changes since the KRX came out. Check the year range on every listing, not just the model name.
  • Trim. Depending on year and trim, some KRX models leave the factory with a roof, lighting, or other extras already installed. Look over your machine before you buy a second one of something.
  • What's already on the cage. If a previous owner added a light bar or roof rack, that can change where mirrors, whips, or a rear panel can mount.

What KRX owners upgrade first

Roof and windshield

This is usually the first real purchase. A roof keeps sun and rain off, and it's the mounting point for lights and speakers later. For the windshield, think about how you ride. A full windshield is great in cold weather and in dust from the machine ahead, but it holds heat in summer. A half windshield deflects wind without sealing the cab. Rear window or dust panel

Once you add a front windshield, dust tends to get pulled into the cab from behind. A rear panel cuts that back-draft a lot. If you run a full front windshield, plan on a rear panel too.

Winch and recovery gear

On a machine built for rocks and technical climbs, a winch isn't really optional. Some trims come with one and many don't. Pair it with a tree strap, a snatch block, shackles, and gloves. Synthetic rope is lighter and easier to handle than steel cable, but keep it away from sharp edges and heat. Mirrors

The KRX is a wide machine, and seeing what's behind you on a group ride matters. A rearview mirror plus side mirrors costs little and makes tight trails and trailer loading easier.

Lighting

Slow technical rides often run into dusk. A light bar on the roof or cage gives you reach, and pods at the A-pillars help in tight turns. A spot beam throws light far down the trail, while a flood beam spreads it wide close in. Most riders want a mix. The KRX lighting page shows what fits.

Storage

The cargo bed is useful but open. Bed boxes, cooler mounts, and behind-seat or door bags keep tools, water, and recovery gear secure. On a KRX4, rear passengers take up space you'd otherwise use for gear, so bags matter even more. See the KRX storage options.

A sensible order of upgrades

  1. Mirrors and basic safety gear, including a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.
  2. Roof, then windshield, then a rear panel if you went with a full windshield.
  3. Winch and a basic recovery kit.
  4. Storage, so all that gear has a place to live.
  5. Lighting, wired through a switch panel instead of tapped into random circuits.
  6. Comfort and extras: audio, phone mounts, heaters, doors.

This order puts the things you'll use on every ride first and saves the nice-to-haves for later. It also means the roof is on before you mount lights and speakers to it.

Watch the weight

The KRX is already a heavy machine, and add-ons stack up. A loaded roof rack, full doors, a cooler, and a spare tire all add weight up high or at the back. Think about balance and keep heavy items low. The roof is for light, bulky stuff.
