The Wolverine RMAX is what people buy when they want one side-by-side that does a bit of everything. It rides smooth, the cab is comfortable, and it handles rough trails without beating up the passengers. A lot of them end up as family machines, hunting rigs, or all-day trail cruisers. Keep that in mind, because the best upgrades for an RMAX are usually about comfort, weather, and carrying gear, not chasing speed.
Know what you have before you shop
RMAX fitment is mostly straightforward, but a few things trip people up.
- RMAX2 or RMAX4. The four-seat has a longer cage and a different rear layout. Roofs, rear windows, and anything that spans the cage are specific to seat count.
- Trim level. Yamaha has sold the RMAX in several trims, including R-Spec, XT-R, and Limited Edition. The higher trims come with more from the factory, and what's included has changed by year. Walk around your machine and note what's already on it.
- Model year. Check the year range on every listing. Small changes between years can move a mounting point or a connector.
- It's not a Wolverine X2 or X4. The names are close, but the RMAX is a different machine. Parts listed for the X2 or X4 won't necessarily fit.
The upgrades most RMAX owners make first
Roof and windshield
If your trim didn't come with a roof, that's usually the first thing to add. It keeps the sun off, cuts the rain, and gives you a place to mount lights and a sound bar later. Pick a windshield for the way you ride. A full windshield is warm and quiet in cold weather, a half windshield keeps wind off your chest without sealing the cab, and a vented or flip-up design lets you change your mind on the trail. Rear panel
Add a full windshield and you'll probably notice dust swirling into the cab from the back. A rear window or dust panel fixes most of that. It's a simple part that makes a bigger difference than people expect.
Audio and phone mounts
Because the RMAX is such a comfortable cruiser, a lot of owners add a sound bar or speakers early. A solid phone or GPS mount is just as useful on long rides where you're following a track. Keep audio wiring on its own fused circuit. Browse RMAX audio and phone mounts.
Storage
On an RMAX4 especially, space runs out fast once everyone brings a bag. Door bags, overhead bags, behind-seat storage, and a bed box keep things from bouncing around. For hunters, a secure spot for gear and a dry box for electronics are worth more than any light bar. See RMAX storage.
Winch and lighting
Some trims already have a winch. If yours doesn't, add one before you start exploring harder trails on your own. Carry a tree strap, shackles, and gloves, and never stand in line with a loaded rope. For lighting, a spot beam reaches far down the trail and a flood beam lights up the area close to the machine. A roof-mounted bar plus a pair of pods covers most riding.
An order that makes sense
- Safety basics: mirrors, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit.
- Roof and windshield, then a rear panel if you went with a full windshield.
- Storage for the gear you actually carry.
- Winch and recovery kit if your trim didn't include one.
- Lighting, wired through a switch panel.
- Audio, heaters, and other comfort items.
If you ride in cold weather or hunt late in the season, move weather protection to the top of the list. A full enclosure with a heater can turn a machine you park in November into one you use all winter.
Don't overload the roof
It's tempting to put everything up top. Roof racks are handy, but weight up high changes how any side-by-side feels on off-camber trails. Keep heavy items low and in the bed, and use the roof for light, bulky stuff like sleeping bags or empty coolers.
